A symphony orchestra requires discipline: sheet music, music stands, and a repertoire that leaves no room for error. A university orchestra also possesses a unique energy—that of students playing together. The OSUL’s previous image captured neither of these aspects.
An audit of their materials, as well as those of other orchestras in the region and across France, revealed an untapped opportunity: the fusion of emotions, the unique effect created when an ensemble plays as one. Mathilde, who led the project, translated this into an identity where music is seen before it is heard.
The typeface was custom-designed, with its thick and thin strokes echoing the rhythm of musical notes. The symbol is built upon two stylized staves. Surrounding it, gradients capture the nuances of a tutti—the moment when all sections blend into a single sound—serving as a consistent visual thread across all materials.
A flexible grid system supports the design across posters, programs, and social media. The accompanying style guide and Canva templates allow the orchestra to produce its own materials while maintaining a consistent look and feel.
